I don't do this because not all editing software will use a DNG file and I don't know what I might be using in the future.Īdobe software and other third party software does not read the in camera settings.

If you want to save the settings in the RAW file, you can convert the NEF files to DNG using Adobe's free DNG converter and then ACR will save the settings in the DNG file. I have ACR set to save the setting in a sidecar xmp file instead of the internal database, if I copy the NEF file and xmp file to another computer I have all the ACR settings available on the other computer. I process everything from the NEF file using Photoshop CS6 Adobe Camera RAW (ACR). I have a D700, Nikon Capture NX2, View NX2, and Photoshop CS6. If not: Photoshop is a powerhouse and much more than most of us ever need, there isn't a thing it can't do that the others can. Both of them are only useful if you find Photoshop awkward in any way, or find that it slows you down too much.

If either LR or CaptureNX2 seems beneficial, I would only say: download the trial version and check for yourself. But this also means there is no true interaction between the programs - what you edit in CaptureNX2 is not by default visible in Photoshop, unless you export to TIFF and work on the TIFF.

It does simplify moving from one system to the other, though. That has downsides and upsides - some people feel the RAW file should never be changed, others do not feel that strong about that point. Where PS CS6 and LR store all the edits to your RAW files in a database, CaptureNX2 and ViewNX will store everything inside the NEF file itself. The combination ViewNX2/CaptureNX2 has no serious management capabilities for your photo collection. It can do very very basic editing, and output wise delivers the same quality as CaptureNX2 can. ViewNX2 is a great viewer and to me a good help in quickly importing and culling photos.

CNX2 is capable of very good output, has some very intuitive tools, and a straightforward toolbox plus it retains all your camera settings when you start editing a NEF - that can be an advantage. Not because it's a bad tool (though CaptureNX2 is often frowned upon, for its quirky interface and some legacy complaints that Nikon solved - speed and stability are not much of a problem with the last releases). Would I be a blank sheet today shopping for a tool, I'd choose Lightroom probably.

The Nikon tools - let me say upfront I am a CaptureNX2 user and unlikely to switch. If you struggle staying organised with many photos, Lightroom might make a great addition. That said, the two can work together very fine, and are complimentary. Since you already have PS CS6, you do not need LR, but for most photographers the reverse tends to be more true: if you have LR, you usually do not need Photoshop anymore. Managing many photos, the usual editing steps (white balance/exposure/curves/B&W) - that's all just easier and faster in LR. Lightroom is more focussed on photography (consider Photoshop the swiss army knife Lightroom is just a knife). This is where Lightroom might come into play. But it's not terribly optimised for that. One area to think about is working with high volumes of photos - Photoshop (via Bridge) can do batch-processing, can do tagging/keywords and so on. If you're fine with using Photoshop and feel comfortable with the way it works, it might do perfectly well as the one solution you need. The very short answer: Photoshop CS6 could be all you need. All tools you mention have (or can have) their place, as each brings in different strengths and weaknesses. Steve, frankly there is a lot of apples and oranges in this comparison.
